The Royal Australian Mint 2023 Desert Scorpion 5oz Silver Coin is the third release in the acclaimed Australia’s Most Dangerous series by the Royal Australian Mint. Struck in 5 troy ounces of 99.9% pure silver, this impressive large-format coin combines detailed artistry with powerful symbolism, celebrating one of Australia’s most fascinating native creatures.

The reverse design features the Desert Scorpion (Urodacus yaschenkoi), also known as the inland robust scorpion, depicted walking across the Australian desert beneath the rays of the rising sun. The intricate engraving highlights the scorpion’s distinctive features, including its prominent pincers and curved stinger. Included in the design are the inscriptions DESERT SCORPION and 5 oz .999 SILVER, along with the designer’s mark by Aaron Baggio and the Mint’s traditional styling.

The obverse showcases the memorial effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark, featuring the uncouped portrait with shoulders visible. Surrounding inscriptions include ELIZABETH II 1952–2022 · AUSTRALIA 2023 · 5 DOLLARS ·, commemorating the Queen’s reign. Although issued during the reign of King Charles III, the coin features the memorial obverse as the new effigy was not yet in circulation at the time of release.
